Infiniti has built an enviable reputation for producing high-end cars that blend style, performance, and comfort. The QX55 is the company’s latest take on that approach, offering a streamlined fastback body placed on top of sturdy SUV engineering to carve its own niche in the upscale market. We unboxed the 2022 Infiniti QX55 at our Ottawa dealership, and here’s why it deserves to be at the top of your test-drive list.
The QX55’s sloping fastback roofline gives it the distinct air of a sporty coupe, but its height and bold proportions add the confidence of a high-end SUV. An oversized front grille is an immediate eye-catcher, an impression backed up by sleek LED headlights, fog lights, and taillights. Combine these stylings with the large 20″ wheels featured as standard, and the QX55 is an assured car with plenty of athletic highway presence.
Performance and Tech
But it’s under the hood where the QX55 starts to get really exciting. A 2.0L variable-compression turbo engine makes a punchy 268 horsepower, passed through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to all-wheel drive as standard. Based around the same powertrain as its QX50 stablemate, the QX55 can be relied on to show the same peppy acceleration figures of 0-100 kmh in under 6.5 seconds, with plenty of turbo power available to draw on when a quick burst of speed is needed.
The QX55’s relationship to Infiniti’s SUV range is clear once you get behind the wheel. The interior is spacious, comfortable, and fashioned from high-end materials including leather and wood trim. The fastback roof will inevitably reduce rear headroom and available cargo space a little, but sit in the front row and there’s no hint you’re not in a spacious mid-size SUV.
Adding to the sense of upscale comfort are heated and ventilated front seats, an array of controls on the steering wheel hub, and a clear digital cluster display centred in the dash.
As usual with recent Infiniti models, infotainment is split over two screens. The top display is dedicated to navigation, while the lower one handles media, safety systems, and all other functions. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available over a wireless connection, with more wireless connectivity provided by a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
Safety Tech and Driver Assist
The standard QX55 is supplied with a healthy range of active safety and driver-assist systems, with key features including:
- Forward collision warnings.
- Automatic emergency forward braking.
- Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
- Move up to the higher trims, and adaptive cruise control becomes available paired with Infiniti’s ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving mode.
